Sometimes ignorance is bliss! The race starts outside the Fleece Inn on the cobbles in Haworth to a street packed with supporters. The first 3 or so miles are very fast and furious as there is a severe bottle-neck at a kissing gate early on. It gets quite hectic with people suddenly stopping to take selfies and ooh and ahh at the views. The bottle-neck is actually a welcome recovery from the fast start and is made even more enjoyable by the presence of Haworth Brass Band!

The first half of the race sees Top Withens, several reservoirs and Todmorden Golf Club. It is all relatively tame and this year I managed not to get lost coming out of the golf club (although this involved clinging onto a couple of locals I’d been chatting to at the start). After 20 miles things get a bit more ‘lumpy’. In preparation for the climb up to Stoodley Pike is checkpoint 4, famous for its doughnuts and whisky sampling (yep, put on by the local GP too!). As soon as you are up, it’s back down to Hebden Bridge before going straight back up the other side to Heptonstall. Much chat could be heard questioning why on earth anyone would build a village at the top of such a big hill and indeed which idiots would pay money to run to it! Well worth the climb though as the pub puts on chip butties and Tom Yum soup. Next is another downhill (be careful what you wish for) before the final section back to Haworth where half the village seems to be out cheering. The finish is at the Primary school with cold drinks and pizza from the local takeaway. I learnt my lesson from last year and didn’t sit down at the primary school dining tables (my legs didn’t enjoy trying to get back up!).

Ultra races are sometimes described as a walking picnic and I have to say if eating whilst running is your thing you would be well advised to sign up to the Hobble! I can’t think of a race which is better value for money, especially considering the amount given to local charities.

I haven’t been at full fitness recently so my time was nothing to write home about but I had a thoroughly enjoyable day with superb weather, fabulous conversation with random runners and finished with a smile on my face (and a pint of Timothy Taylor landlord).

Hope to see some more Totley faces next year as it really is a great day out (or morning out for the fast ones)

By Roz This was my second time doing the Hobble so I knew what to expect.
